The Relationship between Pine Forest Area and Specific Flood Volume at Kedungbulus Watershed, Central Java, Indonesia

Flood volume on various pine forest areas has been analyzed to provide information on relationship between flood and forest area in a watershed. There are five sub watersheds with various area of pine forest from 38% to 95% of the watershed area. Each of outlet of the sub watershed has been installed “Automatic Water Level Recorder” (logger water pressure). The logger has been set up for every five minutes of flood monitoring. Stand density varies from 388 to 644 stems/ha, while diameter at breast height (DBH) ranges from 20 to 40 cm. The pine forest areas have negative correlation with specific flood volume until single rainfall depth is less than 70 mm. When single rainfall depth reaches more than 70 mm, there is no correlation; various areas of pine forests have almost same specific flood volume. Pine forest can reduce the volume of flood by 76% when the pine forest area was added by 57%. The specific flood volume is not only influenced by forest area in the watershed but also rainfall depth and rainfall intensity. In order to reduce the flood volume of the pine forest, the conservation of water needs to be managed. Water conservation can use either water trap or terrace depending on the thickness of the soil solum and the slope steepness.
