Peak Discharge from Catchment of Pine Plantations: Comparison Between Direct Measurement and Empirical Model

Peak discharge is a crucial component for hydrological cycle. Information on peak discharges is useful for watershed management. Lacking of automatic stream gauge to record the peak discharges encourages a prediction to obtain information on peak discharges. The purpose of the study is to determine the rational runoff coefficient (C) value for pine plantation and to compare the information on peak discharges between a prediction using Rational method with a direct measurement. The study was conducted in Kalipoh catchment covered by pine plantation in Gombong Subdistrict, Kebumen Regency, Central Java Province. Around 95% of the catchment area consists of pine plantation. A prediction of peak discharges using Rational method is multiplication of a constant C, rainfall intensity, and catchment area. The standard value of C for forest area is 0.3. The direct measurement was conducted by installing stream water level recorder using logger. The analysis was conducted for data recorded in 2016. Data analysis showed 37 peak discharge events. The peak discharge of Kalipoh catchment based on direct measurements ranging from 0.02 to 8.34 m /second. Peak discharge prediction using the original formula of Rational method with the C value of 0.3 produced high deviation compared to the peak discharge from direct measurements. The average deviation is 47%. To reduce the deviation, the average rational runoff coefficient (C=0.2) from direct measurements was applied and the result showed the decrease in deviation, in average the deviation was 19.6%.
